Brick and mortar casino giant Steve Wynn got involved in developing casinos at just the right time, and has profited wildly from helping Las Vegas reemerge in the 90’s as the top global gambling destination. Though Steve Wynn may be a dedicated vegan, he and his company executives have recently been talking turkey with social game developer Zynga about some possible business relationships online in the future. Obviously Wynn Resorts is looking for access to Zynga’s massive, global customer base, which includes more than 230 million monthly users who actively play their social media games in more than 160 countries.
Social media casino games recently overtook farm-based online games as the number one destination for active Facebook gamers, with 13 percent of all Facebook gamers in 2012 playing some form of casino based game, as reported by social media analytics firm Kontagent. That figure is up from 8 percent last year, a more than 60 percent increase. And obviously, Zynga would benefit from a relationship with a company and personality synonymous with real world gambling and Las Vegas excitement. The United States has still failed to pass any federal legislation legalizing online gambling, but forming a relationship with those social media casino gamers that Zynga caters to on a free play basis could prove invaluable in the future to Wynn Resorts, if legalized online gambling does become an American reality.
Zynga’s Texas HoldEm Poker stands as the King of social casino gambling applications on Facebook, with more than 33 million active users monthly, and Zynga is the world’s largest online social game developer. Recently a Zynga spokesman had hinted about a possible interest in online gambling, but their CEO, Mark Pincus, was recently speaking at a Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in San Francisco and removed all doubt about the company’s intentions in that regard. The TMT expo saw Pincus state that he believes the innovation in the next few years concerning “gambling as an entertainment mechanic is going to be mind blowing.”
He then went on to add that Zynga has admired and respected “brands and groups like the Wynn”, and believes that 2012 will see a lot of marriages between brick-and-mortar casino enterprises and social media and other online gaming entities. This is not the first time that one of the top real world casino companies has pushed for legalized Internet gambling in the United States. However, until now no group has been successful.
A real world casino magnate like Wynn does not necessarily have to immediately deliver pay for play gambling to a gaming developer like Zynga. Entering an agreement for advertising or other representation in Zynga’s current free play social casino games could be enough to open the doors for future legalized online social media gaming when and if that occurs. As in the human being mating game, when both parties concerned seem highly interested in each other, a union of some type is almost inevitable. Concerning Wynn Resorts and Zynga, time will only tell, but it appears an online gaming relationship of some type is now only a matter of time.
